Sitting amid some of the most remarkable pieces of European art, I was instantly captivated by Caravaggio’s Saint Jerome Writing. I have since studied Art History with one of the world’s most prestigious art institutes and know the official meaning behind the painting. But, on this hot summer’s day all those years ago, my uneducated first impression was of someone writing their unedited stream of consciousness. I love to write – it is how I understand the world and my own experiences – which is why I fell for this painting when it felt so in tune with my own narrative.
A quote from A Gentleman in Moscow:
Vyshinsky: Why did you write the poem?
Rstov: It demanded to be written. I simply happened to be sitting at the particular desk on a particular morning when it chose to make its demands.
The following gallery is my homage to great art.
